Overview
This course presents scientific research demonstrating how yoga affects the various body systems and how it is beneficial for a variety of health conditions. Topics include: 1. Research on postures, breathing and mantra; 2. The effect of yoga on the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems; 3. The benefits of yoga for mental health disorders including depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. 4. The benefits of yoga for physical health disorders including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions, and cancer.
As yoga teachers and therapists, we understand that yoga is beneficial. Knowledge of the scientific evidence supporting the benefits of yoga is helpful to advance our work.

Meet the Teacher
Julie Staples received a doctorate in Cell and Molecular Biology from St. Louis University. Her research for the past 30 years includes studies with populations world-wide on the benefits of yoga and mind-body medicine. She is Adjunct Assistant Professor at Georgetown University, a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher, and the past Board President of the Guru Ram Das Center for Medicine and Humanology. She is the author of the Yoga chapter in the textbook Fundamentals of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. She published the book titled Reclaiming Life After Trauma.
